Río Arriba County is the largest land area within the Heritage Area, and it is the least populated. The City of Española is the primary municipality in the County, although it is a relatively small community surrounded by a number of villages within the Rio Grande Valley. The County Seat is in Tierra Amarilla, but Española is the gateway to all of Northern New Mexico, opening corridors to communities along the Río Chama, the Río Grande, and the High Road to Taos. A key archaeological attraction in the area north of Española is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Preserve. To the northwest along the Chama River is the village of Abiquiu and the Piedra Lumbre geologic formations.

The one main access road (County Road 57) that leads up to the top of Mesa Hills. Dirt road access off of County Road 57 gets you to the top of the mesa. Nearest towns are Dixon, Hernandez, and Espanola.

Driving Directions
From Alcalde, NM take NM-68 for 5 miles northeast. Turn left onto NM-582 and follow this for 2.2 miles. Turn right at dirt road access. This dirt road may be gated. Follow the dirt road as it snakes upwards for 2.88 miles until you reach the top of the mesa (where everything is even grade). While driving up to mesa be sure to follow the most defined path and the majority of the drive will be going uphill.

Once at the top of the mesa continue on dirt road for .1 miles until there is a fork in the road. At the fork stay to the right and head north for .25 miles. Turn left at dirt road and head west for .25 miles. Turn right and head north on dirt road and go .62 miles. The northeast corner of the property is on the west side of dirt road. Roads leading to the property may not be completed and road signs may not be present. All distances are approximate.
